After numerous calls to ban the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), President Marcos has finally decided to end the program. This decision has brought a sense of relief to the public, as it marks a significant step in the fight against illegal gambling operations.
In recent years, both prominent businessmen and senators from the Philippines have spoken out against the offshore gambling program that many claim leads to illegal acts such as kidnapping and sex trafficking. Some cities even took matters into their own hands and banned the practice in their jurisdiction.
Offshore operators were licensed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) and only allowed to offer their services overseas. With many sites targeting the Chinese market, where gambling is illegal, Chinese officials were willing to assist the PH government in fighting illegal gambling.
This past Monday, President Marcos announced a total shutdown of the industry at a State of the Union address. “Effective today, all POGOs are banned,” said Marcos. He later went on to add that “Disguising as legitimate entities, their operations have ventured into illicit areas furthest from gaming, such as financial scamming, money laundering, prostitution, human trafficking, kidnapping, brutal torture – even murder. The grave abuse and disrespect to our system of laws must stop”.
Is Online Gambling Still Legal In The Philippines?
Yes, the POGO licensing program only allowed certain businesses to offer their gaming services online and not to the Philippines. PH players still have access to legal online casinos operating in the country and to online casinos licensed by PAGCOR to operate in the country. The government is committed to ensuring that legal online gambling options remain available to the public.
For most players, out-of-country services are the best choice, with cryptocurrency gambling options, a vast collection of games including popular slots, poker, live dealer games, and bonus and reward options. However, if you are looking to gamble with Philippine currency, your only option is one of the domestic casinos that offer online services.
What Happens To POGO Operators Now?
Now that the program has been revoked and the licenses are null and void, the Philippine government and the Philippine National Police will thoroughly sweep the industry. This involves a comprehensive investigation, including site visits, financial audits, and interviews with key personnel, to ensure that all operations have ceased. Anyone caught operating after this process will face punishment. While the industry has been under intense regulation and vetted for legitimacy, there are no excuses now.
It is highly likely that the government will continue to pursue illegal activities, and foreign nationals will likely be deported unless they can prove their work and that they came to the country legally. The government’s vigilance in this matter is a reassurance to the public that their safety and security are a top priority.
